Na SON OF SAUL en SUNSET komt László Nemes met ORPHAN. De film speelt zich af in de jaren 50 in Boedapest, twaalf jaar na het einde van de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Het leven van een jonge Joodse jongen wordt ruw verstoord wanneer er een brute man beweert zijn echte vader te zijn. Dit klopt niet met het ideaalbeeld dat zijn moeder hem al die tijd heeft voorgehouden.
